A spark plug is an electrical device that fits into the cylinder head of internal combustion engines. The spark plug performs two tasks within the engine: Ignite the air / fuel mixture. The spark plug ignites the fuel by forcing an arc across a small gap much like a bolt of lightening. A sufficient amount of voltage must be supplied by the ignition system to form the arc. Transfer heat from the combustion chamber The secondary task of the spark plug is to transfer heat away from the combustion chamber through the exhaust gases, the side walls of the cylinder and the spark plug itself. Iridium spark plugs have an insulated center electrode and until recently, platinum was considered the best material to use on the top of the electrode because of its durability. However, Iridium is 6 times harder, 8 times stronger, and has a melting point 1200 degrees higher than platinum. This makes Iridium plugs much more durable under the extreme conditions within the cylinder head of the engine. In addition Iridium plugs require less voltage to spark, burn fuel more efficiently and deliver higher horse power. Platinum spark plugs last much longer than conventional spark plugs and perform more consistently over the course of their service life.
